Understanding your treatment

About this treatment

What are polish and fluoride?

Polish and fluoride are two additional components of a dental cleaning procedure, each serving a different purpose:

  • Polish: After removing plaque and tartar build up, a polish is usually performed using an abrasive paste with a rotating rubber cup. This procedure helps to smoothen the tooth surfaces by removing remaining plaque and surface stains, making it harder for bacteria to adhere.
  • Fluoride Treatment: Fluoride is a natural mineral that is found in water, it is also commonly added in toothpastes and mouthrinses to help strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. After a dental cleaning, fluoride treatment in gel, rinse or varnish form is applied to the teeth. The enamel absorbs the fluoride, enhancing resistance to cavity-causing bacterias and acids. Fluoride is particularly beneficial for high-risk groups such as children and those with a history of cavities.

When do we use them?

Polish and fluoride are typically used during routine dental cleanings. Polishing is done after plaque and tartar removal to smooth tooth surfaces and remove stains. Fluoride treatment follows, applied to teeth to strengthen enamel and protect against decay. These steps are integral to maintaining oral health and are often part of regular dental hygiene appointments.
